May 2016 Bike Month!
It’s that time again, and we have a busy month ahead of us. Join us for great events throughout the month!
May 1: University Hospitals Community Bike Fest and Slow Roll Cleveland Season Opener Ride, 11100 Euclid Ave, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., ride begins at 1 p.m. University Hospitals (UH) will help Slow Roll Cleveland – Ohio’s biggest weekly bicycle ride – kick off its 2016 season with a bike-oriented festival on Sunday, May 1, 2016, just outside UH’s Case Medical Center campus on the corner of Euclid Avenue and UH Drive. UH seeks to promote healthful transportation opportunities through its Rainbow Injury Prevention Center safety program, Healthy Kids program and Emergency Services training program that will provide education on safe biking and helmet fitting as well as UH bike medics to accompany the Slow Roll ride.
May 2: Cleveland Heights City Council declares May Bike Month for the 5th year, 7:30 p.m., City Hall, 40 Severance Circle, 44118. Bike Month is a national event, celebrated in communities from coast to coast to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and to encourage more people to give bicycling a try.
May 4: Walk or Bike to School Day – All Cleveland Heights-University Heights public schools and some private and parochial schools participate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical exercise each day, and walking or bicycling to school is a great way to get some of that needed exercise.
May 10: Lakes-to-Lakes Trail Ribbon Cutting, 6 p.m., Heights Location TBA. Connecting Lake Erie to the Shaker Lakes has been a long-term effort. It’s time to celebrate!
May 14: All Geared Up, Community Bicycling Event for Families, Canterbury Elementary School, 9 a.m. – noon. This includes family bike rides, bike rodeos, free bike helmets while they last, low-cost pre-owned children and adult bicycles for sale, and more. All families are welcome.
May 16-20: Bike to Work Week, a nationwide celebration of bicycle commuting.
May 18: Ride of Silence, 7 p.m. Eastside bicyclists start from John Carroll University SE parking lot, then ride via Fairmount Boulevard through University Heights, Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights to University Hospitals on Adelbert Road, to meet riders from downtown at 7:30 p.m. for a brief ceremony. This is an annual slow, silent memorial ride to honor those injured or killed while riding their bicycles.
May 20: Bike to Work Day. To encourage bicycle commuting, HBC and partners will sponsor a free Coffee/Edibles Station for bicycle commuters at the corner of Edgehill and Overlook Roads, 7-9 a.m. Stop by for conversation and refreshments!
June 4: Bike Tune-up Day at Coventry Courtyard, northwest corner of Coventry Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., FREE. With the support of Coventry Village, Hirobel and Heights Bicycle Coalition assess bicycles’ safety ad make minor repairs. Hirobel is a Cleveland Heights company dedicated to creating innovative tools and accessories that provide advanced solutions for today’s bicycles. Hirobel’s most notable product to date is the Carbon Frame Clamp.
