Heights schools are encouraged to participate in Walk or Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 9.
Actually, any day during October is a good day to walk or bike to school or for schools to have an event to promote these important activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity every day. Schools have so much academic material to cover that few schedule students for a daily hour of running or brisk walking, gymnastics or push-ups, or jumping rope. Kids can get the activity they need for health and focus by walking or biking to school. In addition, walking and biking reduce air pollution and motor vehicle congestion. Finally, biking or walking with family and friends is fun.
